Frequently asked questions

Answers to the most common questions about our professional wood painting courses, materials, safety standards, and logistics.

How long are the wood painting courses?

Our core courses range from 6 weeks for beginners to 14 weeks for advanced finishing programs. Each includes hands-on studio time, safety modules, and final project reviews.

What safety equipment is required?

Students must wear approved respirators, safety goggles, gloves, and coveralls. All PPE is provided during the first week and can be purchased at a discounted student rate.

Which wood species do you teach finishing on?

We cover oak, maple, walnut, pine, cherry, and reclaimed hardwoods. Students learn species-specific preparation, staining, and top-coat techniques for each.

Do I receive a certificate upon completion?

Yes. Every graduate receives a SolidPort Finish School certificate detailing course hours, skills mastered, and safety compliance. Digital copies are also issued for portfolios.

Can I bring my own wood projects?

Students may bring personal projects after completing the first four technique modules. All brought-in pieces must pass a preliminary safety and condition inspection.

Are classes available in the evening or on weekends?

We offer evening cohorts (6–9 pm) and full weekend intensive blocks. Both formats maintain the same 120-hour curriculum and instructor support.

What finishes and products are covered?

Curriculum includes oil-based stains, waterborne finishes, shellac, lacquer, polyurethane, and specialty techniques such as cerusing and liming. Students learn product selection, application, and troubleshooting.

Is payment due upfront or can it be paid in installments?

We offer flexible payment plans: full payment at enrollment, three installments, or monthly billing for eligible students. Contact admissions for current schedule options.

Do you provide job placement assistance?

Graduates receive résumé reviews, portfolio guidance, and access to our employer network of custom furniture makers, restoration studios, and architectural finish contractors.

What is your cancellation and refund policy?

Full refund is available until the end of the first week. After that, prorated refunds minus a $150 administrative fee apply. See our full Terms page for details.
